A Sun Valley man was struck and killed Saturday while he tried to help with a separate crash in Esmeralda County, according to Nevada Highway Patrol.

Trooper Dan Gordon said in a statement that NHP responded to reports of the crash on U.S. 6 north of Tonopah just after 2:10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2.

A two-vehicle DUI collision was blocking the northbound lane of Highway 6, according to NHP's initial investigation. Several people stopped to help, and there were pedestrians in the roadway.

A Nissan Frontier pickup truck was driving north and not able to stop in time, hitting one of the disabled vehicles, Gordon said.

The Sun Valley man, identified as 32-year-old Roy Elick Powell, had stopped to help with the first crash. He was caught in the second crash and succumbed to his injuries.

Trooper Jason Litchie is investigating, and anyone who might have witnessed the crash or would have information is asked to contact him at (775)687-9631 or jdlitchie@dps.state.nv.us, regarding NHP case #170900123.
