Family rooms introduced for children in Second Judicial District Court

Family rooms introduced in Second Judicial District Court

The Second Judicial District Court Family Division and Reno Rodeo Foundation introduced the new Second Judicial District Court Family Division reading rooms on Wednesday, July 18.

The new spaces have been created to provide comfort for children involved in family court proceedings.

The Second Judicial District Court, Reno Rodeo Foundation, Reno Midtown Rotary Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and artist Kandyce Ray worked together to create the reading rooms.

As families go through court proceedings, children are faced with emotionally challenging situations. The Second Judicial District Court Family Division reading rooms, located just outside the courtroom, were created to offer a safe and comforting space that provides children with a refuge from the emotional trauma that often accompanies legal proceedings.

The two reading rooms are decorated for children in a way that creates a sense of comfort with the goal of having volunteer retired teachers read to the children during their time there.

After their visit, each child is gifted a new book to take home. For many, this may be the first new book they’ve ever owned.
