Last Call: Titles leaving Netflix in January 2018

Last Call: Titles leaving Netflix in January 2018 (Photo: Netflix)

(KUTV) For the past few months I've looked through the titles leaving Netflix and shrugged. There have been a handful of titles each month that I was sorry to see go, but the bulk of the titles felt like filler that Netflix used to pad their library numbers. January 2018 is an entirely different story as 20 of this month's departing films and televisions series, including many that I've featured in my "New to Netflix" articles in 2017. Here are five, plus a list of a few more, that I'd recommend catching over the holiday break.

Gremlins

Is "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie? Yes, it is a movie that takes place during Christmas. But my favorite nontraditional-Christmas film is "Gremlins," which begins with the greatest Christmas song ever recorded, Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," and features the classic story of a gift gone awry as little green goblins run amok and terrorize Kingston Falls (a fictional city that was filmed on the same set that was used as Hilly Valley in "Back to the Future"). Maybe it isn't as cheerful as "Elf," "A Christmas Story" or even "A Charlie Brown Christmas," but I love the film anyway.

The Parent Trap (1961)

"The Parent Trap" tells the story of twins who swap places in hopes of getting their divorced parents back together. I know you like the 1998 remake with Lindsay Lohan, but let's head back to 1961 for the original classic starring Hayley Mills.

Police Academy

Released in 1984, the same year as "Gremlins," "Police Academy"was a '80s phenomenon that went on to spawn six sequels. Built on the backs of Steve Guttenberg and that guy who makes all the video game sound effects with his mouth (Michael Leslie Winslow), "Police Academy" follows a group of hapless recruits as they try to become police officers.

Pulp Fiction

I was just getting my toes wet in screenwriting when "Pulp Fiction" became something of a phenomenon and the name Quentin Tarantino made its way into mainstream conversations. The film consists of four narratives that entangle the lives of a seedy group of criminals or otherwise seedy characters. It's all about the dialogue folks.

The Secret Garden (1993)

Francis Ford Coppola served as an executive producer on director Agnieszka Holland's ("In Darkness") adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden." The story follows a young girl, who after her parents are killed in India during an earthquake, goes to live with her uncle and reclusive cousin in England. I've always loved this film, there's just something mysterious and magical about it.
