Driver arrested in Calif. after hit & run, high speed chase

RENO - NHP Troopers were advised of hit and run incident Tuesday morning that led to a car chase, and ended with an arrest in California.

According to officials, a dark green Dodge pickup truck fled after rear-ending another vehicle. NHP Troopers in the Reno area attempted to locate the vehicle and found it northbound on US 395 in South Reno. The driver of the vehicle would not stop, and NHP officers were forced to follow the car on a pursuit that reached speeds in excess of 85 mph along US 395. Although the dodge pickup swerved into other lanes during the pursuit, no other accidents were caused.

Commercial units from NHP were conducting inspections at the Bordertown check site and set up to deploy stop sticks in efforts to end the pursuit. When the pursuit reached Bordertown, the Dodge pickup ran over the stop sticks but continued northbound on US 395 with several NHP units following.

As the pursuit crossed the state line into, NHP got authorization to continue into California. Once in California NHP attempted several times to immobilize the pickup truck. The pickup truck -- which was now driving on three flat tires -- was forced into a skid where it went into the center median and finally stopped.

NHP Troopers were able to extract the lone female driver out of the vehicle. Officials placed her into custody without any resistance. The female driver was identified as 53-year-old Melanie Marnne-Lawson of Reno. She was arrested by CHP for possible driving under the influence and eluding. Lawson could face charges out of Nevada to include Hit and Run from an accident, reckless driving and eluding.
