WCSD officials considering a new name for Sun Valley Middle School
SUN VALLEY, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) -- Washoe County School District officials will be meeting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13th to discuss, among other things, a potentially official name for Sun Valley Middle School.
On February 7, 2018 the district's school naming committee met to hear community input regarding potential names for the middle school, and of the names discussed, the committee narrowed it down to three - Sun Valley, Desert Skies and Michael Landsberry.
Landsberry as a Sparks Middle School teacher who was shot and killed in 2013 trying to protect students from a 12-year-old who opened fire on a campus. Sun Valley and Desert Skies are regional names.
With an estimated construction cost of $85 million, the school will have a 1,400-student capacity, relieving overcrowding at other schools in the area.
The school, which will be home to sixth, seventh and eighth graders, is scheduled to open in fall of 2019. It will be modeled similarly to Depaoli Middle School in South Reno.
The current principal at Dilworth S.T.E.M. Academy, Laura Petersen, will serve as the middle school's principal.
