Fire destroys outbuilding near I-80 in Mogul west of Reno
RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) —
A fire destroyed one outbuilding and damaged another in the Mogul area west of Reno Monday night, according to a fire official.
The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District said the fire was on Bitterbrush Road, with traffic being held on Silva Ranch Road.
The agency later said forward progress was stopped, and that crews will be working on extensive mop-up.
Chief Charles Moore said the fire was contained to about a half-acre. The cause is under investigation, but officials suspect it was a blown transformer after a lightning strike.
Fawn Dotson was home watching television when the blaze sparked in her backyard, and described a loud noise followed by a flash of light.
"I'm thankful that they got it stopped ... it was just horrible, it was huge," Dotson said.
I'm just thankful that I still have a house.
Dotson said a stranger banged on her door while the fire was burning to help find her cats and her tarantula and take them to safety.
A power outage was also reported in the area affecting just under 3,000 customers. That number has fallen to less than 70 customers by 10:15 p.m. Monday. It's unclear if the outage and fire are related.
