Douglas County added to national emergency alert system
MINDEN, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) —
Douglas County has gained access to a national network for emergency alerts.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency authorized Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties and Carson City to access the alert system as a unit on Wednesday, January 10.
Douglas County spokeswoman Melissa Blosser said the system is a major improvement to the county's warning capabilities. She said authorities can now warn the public through commercial television and radio broadcasts, along with the wireless emergency alert program.
The new program does not require residents to sign up or register because it is already active on smartphones.
Blosser said the system is only used for major events and not for routine messaging.
