Crews battle fire at apartment building near Washoe golf course in Reno
RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) —
Crews are battling a fire that broke out in an apartment unit across the street from the Washoe County Golf Course in Reno Tuesday night.
Firefighters are responding to the 2700 block of Plumas Street, just north of Moana Lane. Flames were visible from the deck of an apartment.
Five people had to be rescued from a second-floor balcony. Reno Fire Battalion Chief Mark Winkleman said one person was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. The other four, along with two police officers, were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.
Two police officers also suffered from smoke inhalation, but they were treated on scene as well.
The official said the fire started in a second-story unit, then spread to a third-story unit above it. Both units are considered completely lost.
Two apartments were heavily damaged by fire and eight others are unlivable due to smoke and/or water damage. At least 15 residents were displaced, according to Battalion Chief Mark Winkelman.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with eyewitness information is encouraged to contact the Reno Fire Department.
