Underprivileged students go to outdoor, educational camp
RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) —
Underprivileged students in Washoe County are getting an opportunity of a lifetime.
Kate Smith Elementary School is a Title 1 school, meaning many of the students come from low income families.
To give the students a hands on learning experience, students will attend Great Basin Outdoor School, a three day camp where they learn about healthy habits, explore the outdoors and dive into STEM related subjects.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These are subjects the fifth and sixth graders at Kate Smith are passionate about.
The Nevada Mining Association is sponsoring the students attending camp. Officials say it's important that they help these students because they've seen first hand how their knowledge of STEM subjects has made an impact on the community.
